The Chase Nature Reserve Read More »
Dagenham Chase Local Nature Reserve is one of the top urban nature reserves in the southeast of England. Together with Eastbrookend Country Park, it offers a diverse range of habitats that attract an incredible variety of wildlife.
Over the years, rare bird sightings have included Great Snipe, Pine Bunting, and Spotted Crake—so you never know what you might spot!
Covering 48.5 hectares, The Chase is home to shallow wetlands, woodlands, grasslands, and the River Rom, creating the perfect environment for wildlife to thrive. It forms part of a regionally important conservation area, alongside Eastbrookend and Beam Valley Country Parks.
Birdlife is a particular highlight, with over 190 species recorded in the last 50 years. Kingfishers, skylarks, little ringed plovers, and lapwings all breed here, but The Chase is best known for its rare migratory visitors like Pine Bunting, Great Snipe, and Spotted Crake.
Beyond birds, the reserve is also home to water voles, great crested newts, slow worms, and badgers. It’s an important site for rare plants, including the Black Poplar tree, with six of the only 600 female trees left in the UK growing here. Other notable plants include spiny restharrow, warty cabbage, and black mustard.
Whether you’re into birdwatching, wildlife spotting, or just enjoying nature, The Chase is a fantastic place to explore
