Gardening can be great for the environment, supporting biodiversity across our borough and providing food to eat, but did you know that it’s good for people too? In addition to the well-known healing properties of some plants, research increasingly shows that gardening is good for your physical, social and mental health and wellbeing, helping reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and improve health conditions such as obesity. Spending time in nature can also help reduce depression and anxiety, decrease stress levels, and help tackle social isolation.
Workshops led by our Community Gardeners provide opportunities for residents to engage in food growing and horticulture, providing a space to learn new skills, connect with nature and develop meaningful connections with others.
We work with community groups, mental health support groups and the NHS to provide gardening opportunities in community spaces across the borough.

The Bee Superhighway is a project to protect and enhance the Borough’s habitats, increase the amount of wildflower coverage and other pollinator-friendly planting in Kensington and Chelsea, and introduce other features that support bees, butterflies, flies, moths and other pollinators.

We’re planning a network of pollinator ‘stepping stones’ that connect our green spaces and important habitats by providing increased food, shelter, and nesting sites for pollinators.

In the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea we deliver education in schools and short courses for adults as part of their Adult Education Services. These have included: How to Garden, Thyme to Get Together: Herbal Activities, Sunflower Art and a programme of walks: ‘Discovering the Green City’.

We also work in partnership with ACAVA to deliver green activities in their community garden.

Now in its third year, Cultivate Create is a creative growing project for North Kensington families with a focus on wellbeing and emotional resilience. It provides a safe, non-judgmental space for families in which to be creative and connect to nature at ACAVA’s Maxilla Walk Studios and secret garden.
