Our Community Director Becky Daniels expands on the spirit of celebration as the Ranger Community looks to the future.
As Community Director for London National Park City, I’m in awe of the extraordinary spirit of our Ranger Community. 2025 marked the sixth anniversary of our movement, and one of our greatest achievements as we continue to share a vision of a greener, healthier, and wilder London is growing and nurturing this vibrant, diverse group of over 100 urban-nature focused volunteers and green champions. They are individuals from every walk of life, united by a desire to make our city a place where people and nature thrive together.
I’ve seen Rangers bring neglected corners of London back to life – turning a patch of scrubland into buzzing pollinator-friendly gardens, putting boots on the ground (water-quality testing kits in hand) to increase river stewardship, using their passion for greening and growing to bring the spirit of nature connection to housing estates, local community groups, education settings and so much more. I’ve joined Rangers in the capital’s great outdoors for evening singalongs, daytime storytelling, food growing, knowledge-sharing, and leaf printing. These moments remind me that while Ranger projects may begin practical solutions to immediate/forecasted problems they flourish through connection, joy, and care.
Why celebration matters
In community life it can be easy to fall into the trap of focusing on the work still to be done – the next planting, the next workshop, the next policy/planning hurdle to overcome. But celebration invites us to pause, to connect and to appreciate each other; it’s the satisfying lean back moment when volunteers down tools for the day and witness a space they’ve been working on come to life, and the bubble of conversation as neighbours gather trestle tables in the open air and enjoy the bounty of harvest. Celebration sustains us. It recognises the human spirit behind every act of service and reminds us that volunteering is not only about giving, but about belonging and community.
Sharing these moments of recognition helps people feel connected and appreciated, making it more likely people will keep coming back to volunteer. For me, creating these intentional moments of togetherness is an essential part of community building.
Celebration and our Charter
The Charter of London National Park City calls us to explore National Park Cities as a ‘sense of place and way of life’, in fact two of the seven Charter commitments look at the importance of celebrating community in action. It’s about recognising and marking all the positive energy that arises on the journey, the kind that comes from ‘Decisions, sharing, learning and working together’ and ‘Relationships with nature and each other’ rather than waiting for an end goal to be reached before we raise glasses and pat backs. Celebration is saying it all matters, the highs, the lows, the niggling points, the almost-there moments, as we work to turn a vision of a city-wide community that is acting together to make life better for people, wildlife, and nature into an everyday reality.
Celebration Month
It’s for all the reasons I’ve described that Celebration Month (which takes place from mid-September to mid-October) forms a core part of our seasonal programming for Rangers. It’s an opportunity not only to thank volunteers, but to recognise how far we have come as a community – and how much potential still lies ahead. Our Rangers are building something remarkable, and with every gathering, every project, and every shared story, London as a National Park City grows stronger.
I invite you to join us. Celebrate with us. Support us. Whether by attending an event, amplifying our work, or simply finding ways to celebrate in your own neighbourhood – you can be part of this living movement.
