I created a series of events to have a conversation about the role of volunteering in the environmental sector in London.
Event 1: Working Party! Timed for the Urban Tree Festival at Hendon Tiny Orchard invited people to volunteer then document their experience
Event 2: Devotional Objects at Brent Reservoir was specifically designed for leaders of volunteer groups to come together and talk about why they do what they do. The project was both a celebration of grassroots activity but also an opportunity to discuss how the conservation sector has become somewhat reliant on volunteer labour. It was also an opportunity to have some critical conversations around barriers to volunteering and how we might overcome these. Who has time to spare? who can afford the bus fare? who feels safe or welcome? who can do the physical labour?
In London, much of the labour of taking care of nature is dependent on grassroots groups and passionate individuals. Their work is essential ranging from monthly site maintenance to tree planting schemes. They coalesce communities, create friendships and teach essential skills. This project offers gratitude to our volunteers, celebrates them and inspires new folk to get involved. Grassroots volunteer sessions are often called Working Parties…so let’s party!
