Black Growth CIC is a grassroots, Black British-led organisation founded in 2012, advancing Black social and economic empowerment through environmentalism and agriculture. In 2023, the group secured a quarter-acre community-led market garden at Roots Allotments in Croydon, piloting affordable access to fresh food while creating opportunities for community learning and connection. Their vision is a joyful, regenerative food system rooted in community wealth, wellbeing, and intergenerational food justice.

In late summer 2025, the small grants programme further developed the site. This supported the creation of a perennial herb spiral community area using bulbs, seeds, and mulch, designed as a shared learning feature highlighting medicinal and culinary plants and encouraging community stewardship. Led by a qualified herbalist, sessions combined practical skills with education on plant uses and holistic health.

Funding also enabled investment in tools and resources for workshops, including cooking equipment, refreshments, and improved signage. Two community days with 30 participants focused on hands-on learning, harvesting, and socialising, with a further 20 people attending winter workshops.
