Ranger Katie Blake has transformed a once grey, concrete space in Newham into the ELBWO Wellness Garden—a vibrant, healing retreat for the local community.

What was once an empty-walled area is becoming a growing sanctuary that blends nature, sensory experiences, and therapeutic plants to support mental wellbeing, reduce isolation, and foster connection.
The small grant has contributed to the garden through purchasing of comfortable seating, a pergola for meditation, soft ambient lighting, and raised beds filled with aromatherapy herbs and healing sensory plants.

The space is already making a meaningful impact—hosting four community events, engaging over 100 local people, and bringing together a team of 10 dedicated volunteers. It has become a safe and welcoming environment for those still feeling the effects of COVID-19, social anxiety, or isolation.

The garden has also caught the attention of local wellbeing practitioners, with plans for yoga and chair-based exercise sessions already underway—laying the groundwork for ongoing programming and future sustainability.

Katie Blake and team have cultivated a space where nature and community can thrive together. Connecting more people to nature.
