This project involved practical conservation work at Warren Hill in Epping Forest, in collaboration with the Epping Forest Heritage Trust. The activities focused on improving biodiversity by clearing sycamores and supporting the health of ancient trees. Tasks were carried out using hand tools such as loppers and hand saws, with all equipment, tools, and training provided, so no prior experience was required.
The project also included exploring some of the Forest’s oldest trees and learning about how the current landscape reflects centuries of human interaction. The hands-on conservation work highlighted the ongoing connection between people and the Forest throughout its history.
The day was led by the Conservation Officer, who provided guidance and supervision throughout the activities. The project was part of the NLHF Epping Forest: Heritage for All initiative, which also aimed to capture new heritage stories and narratives from participants through photos, videos, and notes.
The project supported participants from communities experiencing racial inequity, with neurodiverse conditions and additional needs, and Women and girls
This collaboration contributed to preserving the Forest’s ecological and historical heritage, while documenting how people continue to shape and care for this landscape.
