We wanted to facilitate year-round gardening activities for the young people who use Weavers. So we bought a second-hand greenhouse which left us with money to buy plants and garden accessories. The funding has contributed to maintaining a thriving vegetable garden and small fruit orchard for the 2800 young people who use the space over the year and who take part in its activities. Food grown in the garden is also going to contribute to free meals and local food bank provision.
Weavers Adventure Playground sits in a low income area in which many of the children we work with (aged 0-17) have special educational needs.
Last year, Weaver’s young people decided to turn some of the unused land in the playground into a thriving vegetable garden. Our current proposal is to continue with this project, by supporting the young people at Weaver’s to nurture and expand their plans for the playground. We want to foster a sense of ownership, pride, and responsibility in them, by providing them with a safe and educational space to connect with nature and rejuvenate their much loved playground. They have decided that they would like more fruit trees on the land, and also a greenhouse, which would allow them to start seedlings under cover and to grow certain plants over winter.
