Queen’s Wood is a nature reserve – a fragment of Ancient Woodland, composed of mostly oak and hornbeam, with a wide variety of other trees and flora. In spring, the wood is filled with anemones in flower, and many other species that indicate its deep history as a wooded place. Richmond Park, London’s largest Royal Park, spans 2,500 acres and is a National Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest. Established by King Charles I in 1637 as a deer hunting park, it was enclosed by high walls, much of which still remain today. A legal case in 1758 secured public access for pedestrians.

A popular spot for over-wintering birds. You can look out over this reserve from three bird hides and a reedbed boardwalk. Access to Kempton Nature Reserve is restricted to members of their Friends scheme to limit disturbance to wildlife, but you can join for free, and you can go along to the open day every year.
Woodland and grassland line the River Brent, bringing nature into this industrial landscape. Part of Brent River Park, the area within a five-mile radius of Brent Bends is home to an impressive 28 species of mammals and 203 species of birds.
Brent Bends itself is a 2.92-hectare woodland in Greater London, managed by the London Borough of Brent. This green space provides a vital habitat for wildlife and a peaceful retreat for visitors.
The Welsh Harp, centred around Brent Reservoir, is one of London’s most important urban wild spaces. Designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), it supports a remarkable variety of wetland birds and plants, making it a key ecological site within the city.
Straddling the Brent and Barnet borough boundary, the reservoir is owned by the Canal & River Trust. Its name comes from a former public house, The Welsh Harp, which stood nearby until the early 1970s.
With its open water, reedbeds, and surrounding habitats, the Welsh Harp remains a haven for wildlife and a peaceful escape from city life.
